Many people buy a used Audi without knowing which infotainment system their car actually has. Understanding the difference between MMI 3G and MIB2 is crucial when choosing the right update or CarPlay module. In this article, we’ll help you identify your system and show you the most cost-effective way to modernize it.

How to Identify Your Audi MMI System

Over the years Audi used very similar interface designs, which can make identification confusing. Here is a quick breakdown:

1. Audi MMI 3G (Basic, High, Plus)

This system was widely used between 2009–2015 in models such as A4 B8, A5 8T, A6 C6/C7, Q5 8R, and Q7 4L.

Key characteristics:

  • Two SD card slots and a DVD drive in the main unit.
  • MMI 3G Plus includes a joystick on the main control knob and originally supported Google Earth maps (now discontinued).

Limitation:
There is no native support for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Navigation maps are updated via SD card or DVD.

2. Audi MIB2 (Modular Infotainment Platform 2)

Introduced around 2015, mainly in models such as A3 8V, A4 B9, A6 C7 facelift, Q5 FY, and Q7 4M.

Key characteristics:

  • More modern interface
  • Faster performance
  • Often paired with the Audi Virtual Cockpit

Capabilities:
Many MIB2 units already include a hidden smartphone interface that can be activated via software.

What Should You Choose for Your Audi?

If your vehicle has MMI 3G, the only way to add modern multimedia features is by installing an external CarPlay / Android Auto retrofit module. This allows you to keep the original screen and system while adding functionality found in the latest 2026 models.

If your car has MIB2, you probably don’t need additional hardware. In most cases, our software activation is enough to enable CarPlay on your screen and update the maps to the latest version.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How can I check the exact software version in my Audi?

Go to:
Menu → Settings → Service/Maintenance → Version Information
Take a photo of the screen.
If you see codes such as “HNav” or “BNav”, you have MMI 3G.
If you see “MHI2”, you have MIB2.

Is installing a CarPlay module in MMI 3G difficult?

Our modules are Plug & Play, meaning they connect directly to the factory wiring harness without cutting any wires. The installation only requires removing the radio unit using special removal keys, which are included in the kit.

Will I get wireless CarPlay after unlocking it in MIB2?

By default, MIB2 supports wired CarPlay. However, we also offer mini adapters that allow full wireless connectivity.
